Sister ships: MAGDEBURG, STRASSBURG, STRALSUND
Notes: The MAGDEBURG class were the first German light cruisers to have their armored belt as an integral part of the hull structure (rather than bolted on, as in previous classes), and had a "cruiser" bow instead of the ram bow found on earlier cruisers. They were re-designed several times during their building, and became the "standard" for subsequent classes. BRESLAU was assigned to the German Mediterranean Squadron (along with the battlecruiser GOEBEN), and in 1914 was incorporated into the Turkish Navy as the MIDILLI, although still manned by her German crew. She saw much action in the Mediterranean. In 1916, two of the 4.1" guns were removed and replaced by two 5.9" guns. On 20 January 1918, during a bombardment of Imbros Island, MIDILLI struck five mines and sank, with a loss of 330 of her crew.
