Notes:  After the success of converted cross-Channel steamers, the Admiralty looked to acquire a larger hull for conversion to a seaplane carrier capable of working with the Grand Fleet.  The only hull immediately available was the old Cunard-line record breaker CAMPANIA, already in the hands of the breakers T. W. Ward, but to that point, only stripped of deck fittings.  She was bought outright on 27 November 1914 and towed to Cammell Laird for a five-month conversion.  The conversion was ambitions, with a 120' flight deck forward, a hangar and workshops.  Unfortunately for the Royal Navy, her machinery was old and required constant attention, and keeping up with the Grand Fleet in all weathers was always a strain.  Upon use, the flight deck was found to be too short; the forward funnel was removed and replaced with twin flat-sided uptakes, allowing the flight deck to be extended between them and to a length of 200'.  The first flight took place on 6 August 1915, by a Sopwith Schneider.  CAMPANIA was commissioned on 17 April 1915 and joined the Grand Fleet.  At Birkenhead for modifications, November, 1915 - April, 1916.  Missed the signal to raise steam, and so was not present at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916.  Dragged her cables during a gale in the Firth of Forth on 5 November 1918, drifted across the bow of the battleship REVENGE, and floundered.
