Notes:   A successful class of fast minelayers, also used for such duties as running special cargoes of ammunition to Malta.  Soon after completion, MANXMAN had 4 - 20mm AA added.  Later, her twin 4.7" mounts were replaced by twin 4" HA mounts, and 8 - 20mm (twin mounts) added. 



Completed in June 1941, MANXMAN was quickly pressed into service as supplies were loaded in her mine deck, and she was sent from "home waters" to Gibraltar. During the summer of 1941, MANXMAN made many runs between Malta and Gibraltar -- usually hauling supplies to Malta, then laying minefields on her return trips to Gibraltar. After a brief period in early 1942, when MANXMAN was stationed at Dover, she returned to the Mediterranean. MANXMAN continued to ferry supplies to Malta, and also carried torpedoes to replenish the supplies of the 10th Submarine Flotilla. On 1 December 1942, MANXMAN was hit by two torpedoes (from a spread of four) fired from U-375, despite the fact she was steaming in a zig-zag pattern at 21 knots. U-375 fired two more torpedoes at MANXMAN, but both missed. MANXMAN was taken under tow and proceeded to Oran for repairs. Repairs took over two years. 


After World War II, MANXMAN's pennant number was changed from "M" to "N". She served in the post-war Royal Navy as a flagship. In 1955, MANXMAN had her aft dual 4" mount replaced by an extended deckhouse.  In 1962, she was taken in at Chatham for conversion to a parent ship for up to 16 coastal minesweepers; during this conversion, her remaining 4" guns were removed; her mine deck was converted to storerooms and offices; half of her boilers were removed, and in their place extra generators and evaporators were installed.  When the conversion was complete in 1963, MANXMAN was sent to the Far East, where she served until 1968.  Upon her recall to "home waters", MANXMAN served for a short time as a training ship for engineering officers.  MANXMAN was stricken from the Royal Navy's list in 1971 and scrapped at Newport in October 1972.
